Cold Calling

Cold Callers Find Motivation in the Strangest Place

There are days when you hit the phones, every prospect has a bad attitude and you could swear, “There is no gravity, the earth sucks.” On the heels of that proclamation is a spiral that pulls your emotions down, down, down with seemingly no hope of ever being emotionally up again.

Here is how those feelings of hopelessness get a death grip on you. Better yet, here is how you can shake that grip and get on with the business at hand.

As your thoughts move toward the negative and are no longer balanced with the positive, your thoughts quite literally emanate exclusively from the very section of the brain that Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) victims live in. All of your thoughts move to the portion of the brain that, by design, gives you two options: fight or flight.

Stay stuck in fight or flight thoughts for too long and the chemicals that create depression will soon appear. This combination only serves to build fears up in our mind that have nothing to do with reality, other than the fact that fear is a very real emotion.

The fight response creates aggression and directs us to quickly get out of the situation as though our life depends on it. Out of a desire for self-preservation we conclude, “Cold calls don’t work, so let’s save out life and quit cold calling.”

This section of the brain runs in two extremes, fight or flight, and from here you no longer have access to your quick wit, your natural talent for bringing laughter, or balance to your thinking.

With this understanding, you can now take concrete steps to shake free of fight or flight and engage in whole brain thinking once again.

  1. Make yourself laugh. The chemicals produced by laughter and the thoughts needed to create a good belly laugh move your thoughts from the post traumatic stress portion of your brain. Read some of those email jokes you have tucked away in your Inbox. A smile will distract your brain from PTST thoughts and give you access to whole brain thinking. You will know your thoughts are in balance again, as the feeling of relaxation prevails.
  2. On a day when you’re feeling a little off-kilter or maybe not as strong as you want to, distract your thought pattern by reading a few pages of a golf magazine or taking a brisk walk.
  3. Find a few people who can cheer you up with a quick phone call and help break the downward spiral of your thoughts.

The little known, big secret to staying motivated to do cold calls is in your ability to distract your thoughts.
